Open Space
Open Space is one of the symbolic stars a chart can carry, and like every star it is flavour rather than a verdict.
What it is
The branches a cycle of stems cannot reach: a seat left empty.
What the old texts say
Whatever that branch stands for is read as thinner, or as working on an inner level rather than a material one. The arithmetic is settled, but the basis is not: day pillar or year pillar, and whether a clash or a combination releases the emptiness is decided differently by different schools.
Korean practice does not agree on how Open Space is counted, so two readers can honestly disagree about whether you carry it at all.
How we read it now
Room rather than lack. An area where meaning matters more than possession, and where filling it in slowly is the point.
In love
A gap can open between the relationship imagined and the one being lived. Naming expectations in concrete terms narrows it fast.
At work
Areas where the reason for the work carries more weight than the output does, and where titles matter least.
