In one sentence

A classical way of naming the dominant pattern of a chart, usually taken from the month pillar.

How it is used

The idea is that one of the Ten Gods dominates the chart and gives the reading its headline, so a reader can say what kind of chart it is before saying anything about the person. Classical texts list many structures and just as many exceptions, and a large share of real charts do not fit a named one cleanly. We do not assign you a structure, because naming one would mean choosing a school; what you see instead is the element balance and the stars the chart actually contains.
