Lesson 2

The five elements are a friend group

Five elements, five personalities, and two cycles that decide who gets along. It is a group chat with rules.

1 of 5

Meet the five

Wood grows, fire burns, earth holds, metal cuts, water flows. Every character in a saju chart belongs to one of them.

Nari: Two cycles, five members. The arrows matter more than the names, which is the part everyone skips.

The generating cycle

Wood feeds fire, fire makes ash and earth, earth holds metal, metal carries water, water grows wood. The friend who gets you out of the house.

The controlling cycle

Water puts out fire — the friend who cancels your plans at 6pm. Fire melts metal, metal cuts wood, wood drinks earth, earth dams water.

Control is not a villain

A fire with no water burns the whole weekend. The cycle that pushes back is also the one that stops you overdoing it.

A reading is a headcount

Your chart counts which elements are crowded and which are thin, because that balance is what everything else is measured against.

Nari: Other people call these "nurturing" and "destructive". I call them "feeds" and "pushes back", because that's what they do.

Count yours

Your birth date, and the engine counts the elements in your chart. Missing ones included — those are the interesting ones.

Your birth date is enough. Nothing is saved, and you don't need an account.

The date is used to compute the chart and then it's gone. It's never stored or sent to analytics.

In one line

Five elements, two cycles: one feeds, one pushes back. Everything else in saju is built on that.

Quick questions

Is a missing element bad?
No. It describes something that takes deliberate effort rather than arriving by default — and plenty of charts are missing one.
Why is my month weighted more?
Because the season decides how strong an element can be at all. A fire born in midwinter and a fire born in midsummer are not the same fire.

Words from this lesson

Was this fun?

For entertainment. Saju describes tendencies, not fixed outcomes.
