Lesson 9

Why your birth time and city matter

Two people born the same day can end up with different charts. Here is where that comes from.

Who's teaching this one?

1 of 5

The hour is a whole pillar

Without a birth time you get six of the eight characters. The missing two are the ones about your private life.

Clock time is political

Time zones are drawn by governments, and they can sit an hour or more away from where the sun actually was. Saju uses the sun.

Your city shifts the clock

The correction depends on your longitude, which is why a chart asks for a birthplace and not just a country.

Born on a season edge

The saju month changes at a solar term, mid-month, at a specific minute. A birthday on that day genuinely depends on the hour.

This is where we are picky

Most free calculators skip the solar correction. We do it, and we tell you when a value is uncertain instead of rounding it quietly.

With and without the time

Add a birth time to see the fourth pillar appear. Leave it out and the reading says what is missing.

Your birth date is enough. Nothing is saved, and you don't need an account.

The date is used to compute the chart and then it's gone. It's never stored or sent to analytics.

In one line

Date gives you six characters. Time and city give you the other two, exactly.

Quick questions

I do not know my birth time at all.
Then read the three-pillar version, which is still most of the chart — or use the birth-time finder, which narrows the likely hours from things you do know about yourself.
How wrong can the clock be?
Depends on how far your birthplace sits from the middle of its time zone. Near the edge it can be more than half an hour, which is enough to move an hour pillar.
